Society News Members
enjoyed 2 very successful Summer Outings.
The first was a coach trip to Mevagissey and the Museum.
The curator explained the history of the building housing the
Museum and talked about some of the exhibits.
The first group then went round the very interesting and
extensive displays while the rest of the party explored the town and
harbour area as well as the Aquarium.
After the groups had changed places there was time for a cup of
tea or to sit by the harbour and have an ice cream before the journey
home. The
second Outing was to Tolgus Tin and the Redruth Museum.
Members looked round the extensive displays housed in the
original Tolgus Tin buildings showing all the processes which took place
from the arrival of the tin ore in waste material to the final stage
when the largely refined tin ore was sent off to the smelter.
The mined ore was crushed by the 12-headed Cornish stamps driven
by an overshot water wheel.
It was washed several times and the coarser sands and finer
slimes were treated in different ways.
We saw all the original equipment to carry out these processes
including the vibrating tables and the Holman slime tables.
The “black tin” as it was called, after being refined as far
as possible, was sent to the smelter to be converted into “white
tin”. After
looking at the Tolgus Tin displays members went into the Redruth Museum
where we were greeted by Ron Opie, the Curator, with tea, coffee and
biscuits which was much appreciated.
There were extensive displays illustrating the industrial and
mining history of the region, together with the military and social
history as well as local and family history.
There was a diverse display of other items including old
costumes, a Cornish kitchen and geological and archaeological material
from the area to name just a few of the exhibits.
There was a very interesting video display and a large collection
of photographs.
Members were amazed at all the material housed there and the work
which had taken place to collect it and then display it all.
