St.Euny Feast

The Redruth Old Cornwall Society celebrated St. Euny Feast at the Wesley Jubilee Hall on Friday 2nd February '07. Ron Opie (President) gave a short talk on St. Euny, the patron saint of Redruth. The members were then entertained by the Summercourt Singers and half-way through the programme some very amusing stories in the Cornish dialect were read by Terry Knight.
After the excellent entertainment a feast supper was had which included a celebration cake baked by Jean Opie. The evening ended with the singing of 'Trelawny'.

St. Euny

St. Euny came from Ireland with his brother St. Erc & their sister St. Ia near the end of the 5th century A.D. They landed at the mouth of the river Hayle and St. Erc settled a little upstream giving his name to the village of St. Erth. St. Ia made her way along the coast and founded St. Ives, whereas St. Euny settled at Lelant for a few years (but Lelant is named after a previous Saint - St. Anna who built the chapel Anjou on some rocks in the estuary, she came from the province of Anjou in France). However, St Euny must have left a stronger impression on the community as he is better remembered, and the 11th century church was later dedicated to him.
He later moved to Sancrede where Carn Euny is named after him. When he finished at Sancrede he made his way to Redruth, although at that time Redruth as such did not exist. It is thought
that he settled near the stream that now separates the Redruth & Illogan parishes and his well is there. It is said that anyone drinking from St. Euny Well will never be hanged. He probably built a small mud chapel on the site of the present church and would have made his way to the top of Carn Brea to preach to the occupants of the Iron-age village, remains of some of the hut circles can still be found there. He was a peculiar looking fellow
with the front half of his head shaved whilst the hair on the back of his head hung down almost to his waist. He wore loose, flowing robes and carried a hand bell. When he had had enough of Redruth he made his way to Wendron where he was not very well received, in fact he was martyred there, probably because the elders of the village thought he was a threat to them.
