News from St Dennis

10th November 2007

Members of St Dennis Old Cornwall Society had a great time this month at the Winter Festival in Wadebridge.  The talk on the Civil War in Cornwall is a passion of the secretary and so was even more enjoyable as a result!  It was great to see the banners and some photos are enclosed for the website.  We think 21 banners were paraded and a marvalous time was had by all.  Well done Wadebridge Old Cornwall Society for being our hosts yet again.

3rd August 2007

Two pieces of news from St Dennis - first our president Mrs Mona Trethewey together with members Miss Kath Penna and Mr Ken Bonython-Richards attended the summer festival in July this year.  Mr Bonython-Richards paraded our banner with all the others and a very enjoyable time was had.  Our grateful thanks to Mrs Bill Glanville for her organisation of a great day.

Secondly, our president Mrs Mona Trethewey has been made a bard.  She has been our president for many years and at age 83 still keeps us in order.  We are very proud of her and congratulate her on receiving this huge honour.

18th April 2007

The St Denys Old Cornwall Society had a tour of the new road yesterday (18th April) after a talk and slide show by their representative, Mr Alun Jones.  Following refreshments we all piled into the minibus and had a very interesting and informative trip along the length of the new road.

We were also to see the many features installed to help maintain wildlife habitat and to protect various species in crossing and recrossing the road.  We also had the most marvelous view of the moor as this road is much higher than the old A30.  In glorious weather the moor looked fantastic and we were able to glean much information from Mr Jones about how the whole project was approached and carried out by the company.

If all roads could be constructed with such attention to detail with regard to animals, habitat, watercourses etc it would be good.  The impact of a road of this size is bound to be great but I think the company has handled it well and with a sensitivity we don't usually associate with big business

A great afternoon was had by all and hopefully the new road which now skirts the moor instead of cutting it in half, will prove a success both to people living in Cornwall and also the wildlife that share the area with us.

20th February 2007

We had a most enjoyable time at Christmas when Bert Biscoe and Pol Hodge the celebrated Cornish poets entertained us with vigour!!  We did enjoy the poems in Cornish though none of us actually speak the language.  Just listening to it was great and Pol very kindly gave the English translations.

Our next meeting, to be held on 19th March, will include a talk by Mrs J Stevenson on the Cornish Dialect.  Something we look forward to with great anticipation.  On 16th April our talk is by Mrs Valerie Jacobs entitled "Tregonnisey to Trenarren" and on 21st May we have Mr Alan Kent talking about Cousin Jack's  Mouthorgan.  We then take a break until October 2007 when our winter programme.
